Did you know that the baseball batting average statistic first appeared in print during the 1874 season? Did you know that during the early 1950s, Allen Roth (a statistician for the Brooklyn Dodgers) and Branch Rickey devised the formular for on-base percentage?
There have been many interesting quotes about baseball statistics throughout baseball history and we are pleased to present a few of our favorites:
"Baseball isn't statistics. Baseball is (Joe) DiMaggio rounding second." - Sportswriter Jimmy Cannon
"(Nap) Lajoie was perhaps the first player to attract nation-wide attention because of his batting average. Prior to his time the fans were only mildly interested in statistics." - Sportswriter Bob French in the Toledo Blade
"Statistics are about as interesting as first base coaches." - Jim Bouton
"Statistics are the lifeblood of baseball." - Leonard Koppett in A Thinking Man's Guide to Baseball (1967)
"They both (bikinis & statistics) show a lot, but not everything." - Toby Harrah
"Who says there's an unemployment problem in this country? Just take the five percent unemployed and give them a baseball stat to follow." - Andy Van Slyke
Every year a company named Stats, Inc. releases a super series of books dedicated to baseball statistics. Click their name to see the most recent list of titles.

Baseball starts with a team . . a team of nine teammates . . . if you have ever played Khoury League Baseball as a child . . . there are more than nine on your team. Just as in any team that any of us are involved in our day-to-day lives. Baseball is not different than a team of co-workers - no different than a team of teachers, - no different than a team of daycare workers who are focused on one thing . . . winning! Whether it is winning at the daycare or the classroom or on the ball diamond, winning is and should be your goal. In order to make a winning team, you need to ensure that all of the team players are focused on the end result . . . whatever those results are and ensure everyone is focused in the right direction.
With goals being achieved and questioned this year in Major League Baseball, striving for quality in all we do is of utmost importance. Whether you are chasing a baseball home run title, hitting your sales mark for the monthly quota, or reaching your patient satisfaction scores as a nurse in your local hospital/medical center, the characteristics are the same. Everyone likes goals - whether we believe we do or not - and each of us appreciates being told we did a great job when we achieve our goals too.As we build our teams in life and in the workplace, it is always important to realize and "double check" that the team is focused on the same end result or goals. Even just one "player" not focused on the end result/goal can sideline the team and keep the rest of your team players from hitting the bullseye.
